Existential Cinema

Stripped down to its simplest meaning, existentialism posits that there is no god, that humankind is alone and that ulimately it is alone that we face the void. Welcome to the films of Red Scream. In the Red Scream universe there is no god. There is no heaven. There is no good. Ultimately we are all alone or soon will be. And alone we face the void. We may survive the encounter but if we do we will not emerge unscathed or unchanged. Of course with only two films currently in release (Prison of the Psychotic Damned and FrightWorld) it is impossible for the average horror fan to tell, but once Red Scream Vampyres, Red Scream Nosferatu, and Terminal Descent are released either late this year or early next, that slate of films should make it clear. In the Red Scream universe there is a hell. There is evil. There is little hope and that which there may be is soon dashed to pieces. And in the end, even if the last man or woman standing has made it through the void, their mind is fractured, their will is broken, their innate goodness has been destroyed.

Cloverfield, Sweeny Todd, and HD

Watched Cloverfield and Sweeny Todd this weekend. Two very different films that show the scope possible within the horror genre. Cloverfield takes the “blair witch you-are-there shaky cam” aesthetic, blends it with some pretty impressive CGI work and creates a compelling story that once it gets started never stops, and features interesting 3-dimensional characters you come to care about. Sweeny Todd is a musical with enough throat-slashing and arterial spray to keep those who prefer their horror nonmusical interested. Visually the film is absolutely stunning but then you cannot expect less from Tim Burton.

I made the move to HD this weekend as well. I spend much of Sunday looking through the various channels. Man, some of the nature stuff was like looking out your window it was that real. Later on that evening the wife put on some non-HD channel and I have to leave the room. The image was so bad it gave me a headache.  The show didn’t help.

Lorenzo to Direct "the darkness"............

Debra Ann Lorenzo of Red Scream Films LLC will be directing the upcoming Medicine Show Cinema production of “the darkness”. The story revolves around the plight of a diverse group of people trapped in a dark warehose who are stalked by light-fearing creatures. With a dwindling supply of light producing materials, the group must find their way out of the warehouse and into the outside world before they are picked off one by one by the creatures. The film is being produced by David R Williams who also wrote the script and is heading up the fx team. In past Red Scream Films LLC productions Ms. Lorenzo has worked as both an actress (Prison of the Psychotic Damned, The Eldritch) and as Producer, Production Manager and 1st AD. Texas Chainsaw The Musical

I just found out they did a musical version of Dario Argento’s Deep Red. I just find that strange as hell.

Reality....what a concept!

I have not yet read the actual article but in this month’s SEED magazine they write about a lab that is doing research on the nature of reality seeking to answer the question “Do we creatre the world just by looking at it?”. You’d think this would be more the type of question to be pondered in a philosophy classroom than a science lab but ever since the advent of quantum physics, the nature of reality has been a hot topic. This got me thinking (uh oh).

Have you ever had this happen to you? You look for something. Its not where you remember - distinctly remember - putting it. You look around the area. Nothing. You look under the cushions. You look under furniture. You check the bathroom to see if you took it with you last time you went up to take a crap. You check the kitchen in case you left it there when making that sandwich that lead to your taking a crap. You even go outside just in case. Nothing. Nowhere to be found. You decide to go back to where you started and you take another look…and there it is.

You wonder, I looked here before, how did I not see that?

Maybe because it wasn’t there the first time. Maybe because the whosie whatsit you were looking for ceased to exist or fell between the realities or got stolen by fairies. Then, the more you looked for it, the more you thought about it, the more real it became and it came back into existance, or got pulled back from wherever it had gone to…or the fairies brought it back.

This happens all the time.

My grandmother’s mother use to say it was the fairies came and took it and then brought it back. Basically it was the fairies fucking with you (and hard-drinking old Irish woman that she was she probably would have used just those words!).

Or maybe it was reality doing the fucking.
